There was some early confidence from national experts about Michigan football being able to land the commitment of transfer quarterback Billy Edwards.
Yet, his visit to Wisconsin last weekend loomed large and as it turned out, Edwards never made his scheduled visit to Ann Arbor. He canceled the trip and committed to Wisconsin on Monday.
Michigan football still needs and wants a veteran quarterback to pair with Bryce Underwood. The 2021 Cade McNamara/J.J. McCarthy timeshare would probably be the ideal scenario, assuming the veteran QB actually wants to act as a mentor. Cade didn't.
That's why you have to be selective. You need a veteran who can help you win games, but also one that understands Bryce is the future, and that the future could come anytime next season.
At the very least, Underwood needs to play, just like McCarthy did. J.J. helped that 2021 team win some critical games and also got valuable experience in the process. McCarthy had a rushing touchdown and a passing touchdown against Wisconsin, plus a key pass against Ohio State.
The same formula makes a lot of sense. However, you have to get the right dude. Wisconsin probably threw a bunch of money at Edwards and they can also promise him their starting job. Michigan football can't.
A new QB target to know for Michigan football
That doesn't mean there aren't options though. According to Clayton Sayfie of The Wolverine, there is "mutual interest" between Michigan football and former Toledo starter and MAC MVP DeQuan Finn.
Finn transferred to Baylor last season but played only three games due to an injury. He's expected to get a medical hardship for another season and Steve Wiltfong is also reporting the Wolverines as an option. Finn is from Detroit and has 7,390 career passing yards, 66 touchdowns, and 25 interceptions.
Finn has had two seasons with at least 20 touchdown passes. The 6-foot-2, 207-pound quarterback also has three seasons with at least 500 rushing yards. For his career, he's got 1,907 rushing yards and 27 touchdowns.
Last season, in three games for Baylor, Finn threw for 307 yards and three touchdowns. He also was picked off twice and rushed 21 times for 66 yards.
There are plenty of other options, but Finn would make a lot of sense. He feels like he could be the bridge to Bryce Underwood that the Wolverines need.
