Playing left tackle for Michigan football is one of the most prestigious jobs in all of college football. It's not a duty that is taken lightly. This year, U-M is fortunate enough to have about three players who they can plug into the lineup at any moment. While most consider Andrew Sprague to be the starter on the right side of the line, what if the Wolverines experimented with him on the left side this season?
Ever since Sprague put on the winged helmet, he's been a right tackle. He finished last year as Michigan's highest-graded lineman per Pro Football Focus. Sprague was one of only five Big Ten tackles to post the highest grades in both the run and the passing game. PFF ranked him as one of the top returning tackles in the country for his efforts.
Now that he is being coached by Jim Harding, Sprague's potential is limitless. A flip to the left side could be just what Sprague needs to take that next leap to a first-round lock in the eyes of NFL scouts.
Moving to left tackle could benefit Andrew Sprague and Michigan football
At Utah, Harding had two tackles who anchored both sides of the line of scrimmage, and they went on to be two of the tackles drafted on the first night of the draft. Harding inherits a similar situation with Michigan football and can take advantage of that by using Sprague on the left and bringing along Andrew Babalola slowly on the right. Babalola can then take over next season if Sprague decides to go to the NFL and project his journey to an NFL starter at left tackle.
Sprague is arguably the best lineman that Michigan football has on the roster. Why not let him help protect Bryce Underwood's blindside and see how he fares in that essential role? With camp wrapped up, it's possible that the staff has already tinkered with this idea and has a plan in place to implement this during the season. Neither Babalola nor Blake Frazier has grabbed a stranglehold on the job during camp, so working Sprague into the picture would not be that far-fetched and could turn out to be beneficial for all parties involved.
