Michigan Wolverines seeking to fill key need in transfer portal

Michigan football hasn't been that active in the spring transfer portal window but that could change, at least at the cornerback position.

While the focus right now is on the 2025 NFL draft, the Michigan Wolverines are still working on adding to their roster for the 2025 season via the transfer portal.

The portal has now closed. Michigan football suffered a few minor departures, but nobody on the two-deep. The Wolverines were expected to be aggressive in the pursuit of an offensive tackle or wide receiver, but so far, that hasn't happened.

However, Michigan is seeking to fill another need in the transfer portal, and is in contact with two transfer portal cornerbacks according to EJ Holland of The Wolverine.

One of the players in contact with the Wolverines is Brian Nelson, who just had 53 tackles, four interceptions and three pass breakups for North Texas last season. He's 6-foot, 191 pounds and a would be a redshirt sophomore.

He's only completed two years of school, which should make admissions easier. He started eight games last season and was First-Team All AAC, according to the College Football Network.

Holland also reported that Michigan football is interested in Emmanuel Karnley, a 6-foot-3 freshman cornerback who had 11 tackles and five pass breakups for Arizona last season. The Wolverines hosted him for a visit before he committed to Miami during the winter transfer portal window.

Karnley recently entered in the portal again. He also has three years of eligibility. Both players have talent and would add nice boost to the depth at cornerback heading into 2025.

Cornerback has been an underrated need for Michigan football. Jyaire Hill and Zeke Berry are the projected starters. They both started for most of last season, but Berry started his career at safety.

Hill has shown flashes of being a No. 1 caliber corner, yet needs to be more consistent. There is some dynamic young talent
