Classes are in session in Ann Arbor, and with that, all fall sports are officially underway. Michigan will take the football field this week, starting a new era for the Wolverines with Kyle Whittingham leading the way. With a primetime kickoff, Michigan will hope to down a solid MAC contender in Western Michigan.
Football isn't the only sport officially underway, as volleyball hit the court this weekend, walking away with a lot of success. So, let's catch you up on some stuff you may have missed over the weekend and early on in the week.
Michigan Wolverines who made NFL rosters for the 2026 season
College football has begun, which means the 2026 NFL season is just weeks away, but each team must cut down its roster to 53 players by Monday. Plenty of Michigan players will get ready to hit the field in the pros this season, and a few are now looking for new teams.
Some notable names to make rosters are former National Championship-winning quarterback J.J. McCarthy, who was recently demoted to QB2 after new Minnesota Vikings QB Kyler Murray won the starting job. McCarthy is still on the Vikings roster, but some believe maybe he shouldn't be.
Michigan saw a total of 41 former players make NFL rosters, and hopefully one of them gets to hoist the Lombardi Trophy at the end of the season.
Michigan running backs coach Tony Alford shows support for 2028 recruits
The 2026 football season is officially upon us, but just because games will now commence doesn't mean recruiting will end. Whittingham and his staff are still hard at work putting the finishing touches on the Class of 2027 and continuing the work on the 2028 class.
Running backs coach Tony Alford is setting himself and his staff apart from other schools, making sure to wish recruits who haven't even committed to Michigan, but the Wolverines have shown interest in, luck in their high school games this season.
Four-star running back Cartae Ligon received a video message from Alford and one of his staff members before he hit the field for Michigan's practice, wishing him luck and telling him to show everyone who he is. Alford and other Michigan staff members have made the effort to do this as the high school football season has begun, proving Whittingham is setting his staff apart now at Michigan.
Michigan volleyball completes perfect opening weekend with huge win over ACC's Miami
Michigan volleyball began its season on Friday after a series of exhibition matches. Opening against LIU might not have been the toughest competition, but the Wolverines didn't get caught in a trap game, cruising to a 3-0 win over the Sharks.
It was a quick turnaround for the Wolverines, who welcomed Miami on Saturday with a fun Beach Party theme. Michigan didn't let the game get close, and the Hurricanes failed to even score 20 points in a set as the Wolverines dominated in their 3-0 win.
Now, Michigan will jump into its SEC/Big Ten Challenge, taking on South Carolina Tuesday, September 1, in Ann Arbor on The Big Ten Network, followed by a match against LSU on Wednesday on Big Ten+.
