There were a couple of important news items to cover for the Michigan football team on Tuesday, one of which was news that Kyle Whittingham was hoping wouldn't get out.

Whittingham said that Michigan football coaches decided on Sunday who the starting quarterback was going to be. He just wasn't going to reveal it to the media, although Curt Cignetti saw right through that and said in his own press conference that he expected it to be Tommy Carr instead of Bryce Underwood, who was benched against Penn State.

Matt Zenitz of 247 Sports reported on Tuesday night that Carr will be the starter, according to sources. It shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. The offense was smoother with Carr in the game, although it remains to be seen how the freshman will play as the starter.

It's a little different when the other team is preparing for you. However, the defense and running game should be Carr's best friend. The freshman can run, too. He was 5-of-7 passing for 47 yards in the second half against Penn State. He also ran for 36 yards and a touchdown.

Michigan secondary gets key reinforcement

Jeremiah Earby has officially joined the Michigan football team. He is now on the official roster. The former Boise State cornerback, a 2025 Second-Team All-Mountain West selection, is immediately eligible to play for the Wolverines.

After watching the cornerbacks struggle against Penn State, you wonder if Earby will get a chance to play this week. He played for safeties coach Tyler Stockton at Boise State last season, so there is some familiarity.

Michigan football added him to the roster for a reason. Last season, Earby was credited with 60 tackles for Boise State, four interceptions and nine pass breakups. He's got seven career interceptions and 33 pass breakups.

Earby is also 6-foot-2. We saw more Shamari Earls at the end of the game last week. At this point, who knows how much Earby has practiced, but it feels like he has played enough football that the coaching staff should be able to get him up to speed.

It's hard to know how much Earby has practiced or been around the team. However, with his pedigree and the secondary playing less than stellar in recent weeks, the former all-conference standout might just find his way on the field.

That's something else to watch on Saturday.

Michigan football flips a 2027 commitment from Toledo

A three-star wide receiver, Yuto Kawamura-Johnson, a 5-foot-11 wide receiver, who is from Japan, flipped his commitment to Michigan football on Tuesday.

Kawamura-Johnson moved to the United States over a year ago. Playing for West Orange High School, and according to 247 Sports, finished his 12-game high school season with 50 catches for 766 yards (15.3 YPC) and 10 touchdowns.

Kawamura-Johnson was offered by UAB, UConn, South Florida, and was committed to Toledo. The Michigan offer changed everything. He's ranked No. 1,847 overall in the 2027 class, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. Clearly, Kawamura-Johnson is a developmental prospect.

He played for Japan's national flag football team. He's quick and has good hands. It feels like a player worth taking a shot on.
