Michigan football has suffered a few departures to the NFL draft, but so far, all of them have been expected. Mason Graham, Colston Loveland, and Will Johnson were all expected to go pro.
Myles Hinton has also declared for the NFL draft. We haven't heard from Kenneth Grant yet, but I would expect the defensive tackle to declare too. He's got a high grade like the others.
However, Michigan football got tremendous news on Saturday as Derrick Moore and TJ Guy, the projected starting defensive ends next season, told reporters they would be back for the 2025 season.
For the Wolverines, it's hard to understate how important that is. Moore had 19 tackles, four tackles for loss, and two sacks last season, but the numbers don't show how important he was to the defensive front.
Guy, a 6-foot-4, 250-pound EDGE, is also coming off a stellar campaign. He had 27 tackles last season for Michigan football along with seven tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks. Cameron Brandt will also be in the mix after two sacks last season, plus the Wovlerines have a bunch of young EDGE talent just waiting to take the next step.
Rayshaun Benny is another name to watch. The defensive tackle has been a starting-caliber player the past two seasons and would easily get drafted in the first few rounds of the NFL draft. But if he returned to Michigan football, like Moore and Guy, he could play his way up draft boards.
Still, the returns of Moore and Guy are huge. Those two are probably better than any pass rusher Michigan football could land in the transfer portal.
Donovan Edwards won't play in the Bowl Game
Another bit of news from Saturday is that Michigan Wolverines running back Donovan Edwards won't play in the Reliaquest Bowl, which will end his U-M career.
Edwards finishes his Michigan football career with 2,251 rushing yards (5.3 per carry) and 19 touchdowns, as well as 86 receptions for 797 yards and four scores. That's 3,048 total yards for "The Don" who was also 4-for-4 as a passer in his career with 131 yards and two touchdowns.
Edwards completed a touchdown pass in the Big Ten title game (2021), a pass to Colston Loveland against Ohio State in 2023, and also a touchdown pass against Michigan State in 2024.
Donovan Edwards also had two touchdown runs in the national title win over Washington and of course, the 75 and 85-yard touchdown runs against Ohio State in 2022. Those four plays alone make him a Michigan football legend.
Michigan women's basketball wins ninth game in a row
The Michigan Wolverines women's basketball team, which is ranked 20th in the country, won their ninth game in a row on Saturday over Detroit,100-54.
Michigan shot 55 percent from the field and 50 percent from 3-point range on their way to scoring 100 points for the second time this season. Olivia Olson was a driving force in the win for Michigan women's basketball, connecting on 7-of-11 shot attempts for 22 points. Syla Swords scored nine points, grabbed five rebounds, and dished out three assists in just 14 minutes, while Jordan Hobbs scored eight points in 19 minutes.
On Tuesday, a huge challenge awaits as the Wolverines will take on Oklahoma as part of the Jumpman Classic. The Sooners are 8-1 and ranked 10th, so the Wolverines will be taking part in their first top-25 matchup of the season.
