The start of a new week means more Michigan Athletics news. While football dominates the headlines, basketball is quietly making moves, and volleyball and soccer have officially started their seasons as well. So here are a few of the biggest headlines from each sport.
Michigan, Mike Boynton lands one of 5-star Brady Pettigrew's five official visits
One of the hottest 2028 recruits, five-star combo guard Brady Pettigrew, set five official visits as reported by Sam Kayser. The recruiting period for the 2028 class opened just a few months ago, and the No. 1 combo guard in the country has received a total of 35 offers, one of which is from Mike Boynton and the Wolverines.
Pettigrew set five visits, starting off with Michigan on September 12, then heading to Florida, Illinois, Ohio State, and Arkansas. This is going to be a long recruiting process, but if Boynton can create a strong relationship with Pettigrew, it would be huge as the new head coach at Michigan.
Kyle Whittingham offers extremely high praise of former Utah WR JJ Buchanan
The wide receiver room has been talked about frequently, and two names seem to come up the most: Andrew Marsh and JJ Buchanan. Marsh was the leading receiver for the Wolverines last season, but Buchanan is the new face in town- well, at least to Michigan fans.
Buchanan came to Michigan with Whittingham through the transfer portal. When speaking to the media after practice, Whittingham made sure to give his former Utah receiver some major praise.
"JJ Buchanan is a special receiver. He's, uh, at times, unguardable in practice. I mean, he's the 50 50 ball, the contested catch up the field," Whittingham said. "He's as good as anybody I've ever been around. Uh, he's got size, you know, 6'3, 215 pounds. He can run, he can jump, he's tough, he'll block. You know, he's a complete receiver."
Buchanan seems to have settled in pretty well with Michigan, especially catching passes from quarterback Bryce Underwood. His addition to the offense, especially in the wide receiver room, is something the Wolverines desperately needed.

Football and basketball aren't the only sports at Michigan, and in the fall, volleyball adn soccer begin their seasons. Michigan volleyball plays two matches before the official start of the season, one against Pitt and then against Notre Dame. It is solid competition before the regular season begins to help gauge where this team is before conference play starts in a couple of weeks.
Both men's and women's soccer are set to begin at Michigan, with the women's team already at 0-1-0 after tying with Utah Valley on Thursday. The men aren't set to begin their season officially until Thursday, when they host LMU in Ann Arbor.
