Michigan 'took some swings' before making Mike Boynton its head coach

Michigan basketball Mike Boynton was hired as the head coach, but the Wolverines were looking at some other targets first.

Michigan basketball made it official on Friday, as Warde Manuel, the Michigan AD named Mike Boynton the program's head coach with a two-year deal.

Some fans have pushed back on it. They have argued that the Wolverines should have attempted to hire an elite coach, or should have waited for the 2026-27 season to transpire before giving Boynton a long-term deal.

However, two years isn't a long-term deal. A two-year contract provides more stability than being the interim head coach, especially when it comes to hiring assistant coaches and recruiting. High school recruiting shouldn't be a concern.

But a two-year deal is essentially the same thing as being the interim head coach as far as expectations. This is a one-year audition. Make no mistake about that. If this team, with a top-5 roster doesn't make the NCAA Tournament or falls flat on its face, it will be hard for Boynton to keep the job.

Boynton did a masterful job of keeping the Michigan basketball roster together, but he wasn't handed the keys to the program without some outside candidates being considered first.

"Warde Manuel took some swings with some BIG names to see if he could lure anyone. But after all these kids kept their commitment and said they wanted to play for Boynton, that made it easier to make this move," Jeff Goodman said on the Field of 68 Podcast.

Michigan tried for some big names, but Mike Boynton was the best option

The fact that Boynton was able to retain the entire roster was massive. As soon as it was reported that May was leaving for the NBA, it felt like it was going to be open season on the roster. It was, but thanks in part to Boynton, Michigan was able to keep the roster together.

A two-year deal doesn't lock Michigan into anything. It gives Boynton, a coach with a mild level of success at Oklahoma State, and a chance to show what he's learned with a much better roster.

Boynton has recruited well in the past. He signed Cade Cunningham at Oklahoma State, coached three top-20 defenses, according to KenPom, and had the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year.

Michigan's defense should be elite. The Wolverines have one of the best rosters in the country, and if Boynton is worth his salt, this will be one of the best college basketball teams in the country.
