With college football expanding its surroundings nowadays, there are creative ideas being floated around by the second. Making money is the No. 1 priority for the NCAA and universities alike. Michigan could capitalize on its world-renowned status by expanding its brand globally. Assuming all parties come to an agreement and a deal is struck, these are three stadiums across the globe that the maize and blue should entertain the thought of playing a game in the future.
Indianapolis Motor Speedway
We've seen a college football contest at a racing track before. The battle at Bristol holds the record for the highest single-game attendance about a decade ago. Now imagine Michigan playing Notre Dame or in the Big Ten championship game against Ohio State in Indy. I'm not sure it would sell out since the capacity is over 250,000 plus, but what if it were a top-five tilt between two power-four participants? It would bring in so much money from ticket sales and television ratings alone that I'm surprised it hasn't been done yet.
Wembley Stadium
The NFL London games have been a smash hit ever since they debuted in 2007 and that's why they tend to go back every year. The new and old Wembley stadium have hosted every thing from Soccer to professional wrestling. A college football game with a brand name like Michigan in London would make billions of dollars with just the plane tickets sold separately. Pairing Michigan with an SEC, ACC or Big 12 powerhouse across the pond is totally worth the price of admission in my opinion.
Estadio Azteca
Mexico City is another home to the NFL, Boxing events and concerts featuring Michael Jackson, U2, Paul McCartney and more. Over 75,000 people have annually attended an NFL game inside Estadio Azteca. Playing in a forum that was home to the Olympics is truly rarified territory. The possibilities for dream venues involving the Wolverines are tempting, attractive and endless. The likelihood of any of these actually happening seems like a fairytale.
