Michigan football fans were hoping that the Wolverines would find an elite wide receiver to pair with Bryce Underwood.
Many wanted one in the transfer portal last offseason. Some are hoping for another in this upcoming transfer portal widow.
But the good news is that Michigan football already has its No. 1 wide receiver in Andrew Marsh, who, over the past six games, has been one of the best wideouts in the Big Ten as a true freshman.
Makai Lemon and Jeremiah Smith are two of the only three players with more receiving yards than Marsh during Big Ten Play, and the freshman wasn't even incorporated into the offense until the Wisconsin game. He had zero catches against Nebraska.
So in the past six games, Marsh has averaged six receptions for 89 yards. He's gone over 100 yards twice, including a 12-catch, 189-yard performance against Northwestern, a team that barely allowed 190 yards passing per game on the season before playing Michigan football.
Marsh caught a few passes of more than 20 yards, including a 21-yarder to set up the game winning field goal. He also caught a 31-yard pass up the sideline that lead to a touchdown.
The consistency has been impressive. He's done it against good competition, too. This isn't stat-padding against Central Michigan. He's had at least 54 yards receiving in four of six games, and Michgan, even with Bryce Underwood, isn't all that pass happy.
Marsh has shown the ability to have success in different spots on the field, and different routes. Michigan needs a replacement for Donaven McCulley, and someone with similar size would be useful. The Wolverines also need a slot.
What they don't need is a No. 1 wide receiver. Marsh is already one of the most productive in the conference and by the time Carnell Tate heads to the NFL draft, he might be the best wideout in the Big Ten not named Jeremiah Smith.
If Marsh keeps producing how he has he will be least be in the conversation.
