Michigan projected to land 4-star QB, plus a wise transfer portal pickup

Michigan football wrapped up its spring game on Saturday and has since landed a transfer portal running back, as well as getting a projection for a four-star QB.

One of the positions that Michigan football fans probably weren't concerned about after the spring game on Saturday is running back.

Yet, that didn't stop the Wolverines from adding CJ Hester from the transfer portal a few hours after the spring game concluded on Saturday.

The former UMass running back won't turn heads or make headlines. But after Benjamin Hall entered the transfer portal last week, it's a wise move for Michigan football.

Hester had 119 carries last season for 529 yards and four touchdowns. He also had 14 receptions and in a game against Georgia, carried the ball 15 times for 74 yards. Most of the carries are going to go to Justice Haynes and Jordan Marshall.

However, if one of those guys had gotten hurt, Michigan would be thin on running backs, so the addition of Hester, who has two years to play, was a smart pickup.

Michigan projected to land top-100 QB

There were a bunch of recruits on campus for the spring game, and one of them was top-100 2026 quarterback Brady Smigiel, a 6-foot-5, 205-pound quarterback from Newbury Park, California.

He's ranked 74th overall in the 2026 class. Florida State has the crystal ball lead right now, and also leads according to the On3 Prediction Machine, yet Steve Wiltfong, the top recruiting expert for On3, just projected Michigan football to land Smigiel with 40 percent confidence.

It's been a hard recruitment to read. Washington was the leader at one point but took another quarterback. Nathan Bernhard was also projected to Michigan recently. The three-star from Ohio is ranked No. 560 overall in the 247 Sports composite rankings for 2026.

I don't see the Wolverines taking both quarterbacks, so my guess is that either Bernhard or Smigiel will be committing to Michigan football in short order.
