Sunday's first glimpse of the latest Michigan basketball team was a positive one. Although we'll have to wait until the Houston matchup to truly grade how they will fare this season. Remember that Michigan lost one of its exhibitions last year and went on to only lose three more times after that. That will make for a tough act to follow, but its not impossible.
2 reasons why Michigan can make it to their 10th Final Four in program history
They're deeper then then last year's championship roster
Assuming Roddy Gayle and Kenny Noland are eligible to play, then Michigan could have a slew of choices to choose from coming off the bench. Ricky Liburd, Quinn Costello, Oscar Goodman, and Jalen Reed should all be getting minutes almost every game. Even Joseph Hartman might earn some time after his 10-point outburst in the exhibition win over Eastern Michigan.
A healthy Brandon McCoy and Lincoln Cosby would improve Michigan's chances, but when you compare Michigan's roster with anyone in the country, the Wolverines are not that far behind. The starting five can be one of the nation's best with Gayle in it, but the only thing that they are lacking is the championship coach.
They're 8-1 in their last nine tournament games
There's no question that Michigan should be an automatic entry into the field of 68, but advancing to the Final Four again will be very hard. On the plus side, they have the experience from the last two years on their side. They could feature three starters who have already been there and one who lost to the Wolverines in the Elite 8.
Point being, nobody in the country can say they have won more games in March and April over the last two tournaments, then Michigan. That's a major testament to what this program has become.
