Michigan football is expected to get a mid-season addiiton to the 2026 roster, according to a new report from MLive and also a ruling from a judge.
Alex Bauman, a 2022 recruit who played for the Miami Hurricanes last season, has enrolled at the University of Michigan and was granted a fifth season of eligibility by a local judge, meaning he is eligible to play immediately for the Wolverines. Here is what MLive reported:
"Alex Bauman, a tight end with previous stops at the University of Miami and Tulane University, was granted a motion for a temporary restraining order against the NCAA in Washtenaw County Circuit Court on Tuesday, The Ann Arbor News/MLive has learned."
The article also said this: "Judge Julia B. Owdziej granted a preliminary injunction that orders the NCAA to open the transfer portal for Bauman and allow him to “participate immediately at any NCAA Division I institution during the 2026-27 season.”
Michigan football could get midseason help from former Miami tight end Alex Bauman who would fill critical need
The Michigan football program declined to comment. We'll see what the next steps are, or if Bauman is eligible right away. There are a few players from the 2022 class who ended up with other programs. Notably, those players were drafted into the NFL. Bauman wasn't either, as far as I can tell.
Last season, Bauman played in all 16 games for the Hurricanes. He caught 18 passes for 166 yards and a touchdown. In the three seasons prior to that, he played for Tulane, catching 63 passes for 610 yards and 13 touchdowns.
The 6-foot-5, 250 pounder is known as a better receiver than blocker. Some have blamed him for allowing the blocked punt to happen for Miami in the national championship game.
The New Jersey prospect would add a talented pass catcher to the room, though. He caught 63 passes over two seasons at Tulane, including three for 46 yards as a freshman in the Cotton Bowl.
Michigan's tight end room could use a boost. Zach Marshall and Hogan Hansen haven't contributed much this season. Marshall doesn't have a reception. The Michigan football tight ends as a group have accounted for just 65 receiving yards on nine receptions.
If Bauman is able to play right away, it's certainly possible that he would up that production, although his blocking remains a bit of a question mark.
