Michigan football added a new game to the 2027 schedule recently, Central Michigan, which is scheduled for the same day that the Wolverines were supposed to play Texas.
The Longhorns traveled to Ann Arbor in the 2024 season. Michigan was scheduled to make a return trip to Austin, just as the Wolverines are playing a home-and-home series against Oklahoma.
There has been talk that the Wolverines should cancel the game due the schedule difficultly. Some have questioned whether the game will happen, yet according to Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian, the game will still be played, just potentially on a different date.
I asked Steve Sarkisian about the report that Michigan has added a different game for Sept. 11 next year -- when it is currently scheduled to play Texas.

UT and Michigan will still play in '27, but it might be on a different date. Related to the general CFB scheduling change.
The college football season is expected to move up a week in 2027. The Week 0 for this season will be Week 1 in 2027, so that could cause the game to be moved up a week, like the rest of the season.
College football fans shouldn't be robbed of another marquee matchup
The creation of the 12-team playoff was supposed to encourage teams to schedule more difficult opponents. Michigan football has certainly done that. The Wolverines have a game against an SEC power on the schedule four years in a row. Ohio State also played Texas in 2025 and will play the Horns again in 2026.
That's a good thing for college football. Yes, there is something to be gained and lost in these games. Ohio State and Oklahoma won the non-conference games last season. Michigan and Texas lost and those teams missed the College Football Playoff, in part, because of that.
However, Michigan had other chances. If the Wolverines had beaten Ohio State or even USC, they could have been in the conversation. Texas had other chances, too.
Michigan football fans should want this game to continue. Yes, playing a cupcake non-conference schedule has become popular, but that doesn't mean the Wolverines need to go that route.
Michigan football has always challenged itself in the non-conference portion of the schedule. Notre Dame is coming back in a few years. The truth is that playing an easier schedule isn't going to make a team good enough to make the playoff.
You are either good enough or you aren't because if you have to manufacture a playoff appearance based on an easy schedule, it kind of defeats the purpose, which is to field a team capable of competing for and winning a national championship.
That's how teams should think at least.
