Michigan football is losing one of the best tight ends, if not the best tight end, in college football. Colston Loveland has already declared for the NFL draft after three seasons with the Wolverines.
Loveland was hindered by injuries this past season but was still highly productive. Replacing him won't be easy. There are some candidates on the roster. Marlin Klein made a couple of key catches against Ohio State and Hogan Hansen has a bright future.
Michigan football targeting top TE transfer Max Klare
Because of those guys, tight end hasn't been viewed as a huge need. However, Michigan football is one of the teams in the mix to land former Purdue tight end Max Klare, the top-ranked player available at the position according to On3.
Here's what recruiting expert Steve Wiltfong of On3.com wrote about Klare, a 6-foot-4, 245-ponder who caught 51 passes for 685 yards and four touchdowns.
"Per a source, the Purdue transfer is considering Louisville, Michigan, Texas, and Texas A&M. Klare was in Ann Arbor on Monday. He’ll be on the Cardinals campus Tuesday."
Michigan football hosted Klare for a visit on Monday, the same day the Wolverines landed three commitments from the transfer portal. U-M has had great success developing tight ends and has had a bunch drafted since Jim Harbaugh arrived. This would be the third straight year.
However, Klare played for current Louisville head coach Jeff Brohm at Purdue. Brohm recruited him there and that connection could be hard to overcome.
Either way, it sounds like a decision is coming soon.
