Michigan basketball finished what might be the most dominant season in the history of Big Ten basketball.
Yes, the Indiana Hoosiers went undefeated against an 18-team schedule 50 years ago, but the Big Ten was a different beast back then. The Wolverines played six ranked teams within Big Ten conference play alone, which accounted for nearly 1/3 of the schedule.
Five of the 20 wins came against top-five opponents, and four of those five wins were by double digits. Only the Nebraska win by three was decided by single digits.
The Wolverines only had four conference games decided by less than 10 points. Michigan was also the first team to ever go 10-0 in the Big Ten on the road, something Indiana didn't do because there were only nine Big Ten road games at the time.
Michigan dominates Big Ten basketball awards
All of this to say it wasn't surprising to see the Wolverines dominate the Big Ten postseason awards as they did on Tuesday. Dusty May was the Big Ten Coach of the Year, according to the media. Yaxel Lendeborg was the Big Ten Player of the Year, and Aday Mara was the Defensive Player of the Year.
Morez Johnson got second-team All-Big Ten from the media and third-team All-Big Ten from the coaches. Aday Mara was third-team All-Big Ten from the coaches and media. Johnson, Lendeborg, and Mara were also three of the five All-Big Ten defensive team selections. Trey McKenney was named to the All-Big Ten freshman team.
The goal this season was to hang three banners. Michigan has one. Next up is the Big Ten tournament.
