Sunday will be a big day for the Michigan basketball program, and not just because the Wolverines have a rivalry game with Michigan State.

Every game against Sparty is a must-win. Michigan also has the chance to sweep the Spartans, something they haven't done in a long time. You also don't want Tom Izzo's crew to win in Crisler. That's happened too many times over the years.

The last time the Wolverines swept the Spartans in the regular season was 12 years ago. Sunday will give Michigan the chance to do that, and an impressive victory could go a long way toward securing the commitment of five-star guard King Gibson, who will be in attendance for the game, according to Sam Kayser.

Michigan basketball hosting 5-star recruit for Michigan State showdown

Gibson is ranked 10th overall in the 2027 recruiting class, according to 247 Sports. The dynamic 6-foot-4 guard is from North Carolina but has moved to the state of Ohio. The Wolverines are among 25 teams to offer. North Carolina and Alabama are some of the biggest names. Duke has shown interest but hasn't offered.

While many critics have suggested that Dusty May has only been able to land top talent because of tampering in the portal, the dude has been on fire on the recruiting trail. The Wolverines have the fifth-ranked class in 2026, with three top-100 recruits.

May also signed five-star guard Trey McKenney, who is poised to have a breakout in March Madness as the Wolverines' secret weapon. And, if Michigan can put together an impressive win over the Spartans on Sunday, maybe another five-star commitment will be coming down the road.
