Michigan Basketball: 3 takeaways from the extermination of Xavier
By Nick Popio
2. Xavier's offense converted just one jumper in the final 7 minutes
With about seven minutes remaining Zach Freemantle cut the lead to eight. It was Xavier's final bucket of the evening. Michigan went on a 19-2 run to win emphatically. Dante Maddox Jr. netted two successful free throws with about a minute on the clock, but the lead had already balloned to 22 at that point.
Michigan's defense was stifling for most of the contest. Xavier only recorded nine buckets in the second 20 minutes. They had just 23 points for the second half combined. Michigan's defense provided 10 steals and produced 19 turnovers. Through the first part of the season, Michigan was having a serious turnover problem, but not on Wednesday.
Dayvion McKnight, who averages around 12 per game, was 1-8 shooting, with his only shot coming from beyond the arc. Their bench totaled seven points. L.J. Cason outscored them by himself. The only thing that Xavier did right was outrebound the Wolverines by two.
Xavier actually shot it better from three then they did from the field, if you want to be technical. They almost matched as many made threes as they had second half buckets. Michigan outshot the Musketeers by about 15% in both categories.
