The 2027 recruiting cycle is not over until all the prospects sign on the dotted line, which is still months away in December. Even though coaches are turning their attention fully to the 2026 season, it doesn't mean there still isn't time for some recruiting, and Michigan is hoping to pull off a 5-star stunner.
While Michigan head coach Kyle Whittingham seems pretty happy with his 2027 recruiting class, there is still a push to flip a few committed guys. There is one uncommitted prospect, though, that has his decision set for Friday, and the Wolverines are reportedly in the mix, but they could be fighting a losing battle.
Five-star cornerback A'mir Sears is set to announce his commitment on Friday, but at this point it feels like a formality. After reclassifying to 2027, the Miami native will pick between his hometown team, the Miami Hurricanes, and the Michigan Wolverines.

Sears is set to make his commitment live on the CBS Sports College Football YouTube Channel on Friday, July 31 at 5:00 p.m. ET. While it is expected that Sears will pick Miami, that doesn't mean Whittingham will just back off, as a commitment doesn't lock him in completely.

The great thing about recruiting cycles is that they don't end until the late fall, so for the 2027 cycle, the Early Signing Period will take place in December, after the 2026 regular season ends. So, for every miss that Whittingham had over the summer, he still has a few more months to make up for it.
Michigan is almost certainly going to miss out on Sears, just like it did with many other five-star talents, but it doesn't mean this is the end of the line for the Wolverines. While Sears is most likely going to pick Miami, he still has game-day visits to make this season, and if Whittingham pushes hard enough, he could find Sears on a plane to Ann Arbor for a big matchup.
Whittingham is showing how much he wants Sears by making such a big push this late in his recruitment, which is pretty darn telling if you ask us. If anything, it feels like Michigan is laying the groundwork for a flip later on during the season - if he does commit to Mario Cristobal and the Canes to start, that is.
Without a five-star recruit in the 2027 class, Whittingham would love to get at least one flip in before the 2027 cycle is officially up. Sears could be the perfect addition to a Michigan defense that is expected to show out this season. Pick the right game for an official visit this fall, and Sears could see a defensive clinic put on by the Wolverines. So, yes, even if Michigan does get some bad news from Sears originally with a Miami commitment, it doesn't mean this recruiting race is going to be over.
