Turns out Derrick Moore won't have to leave the state of Michigan to continue his NFL career.
Moore, a former national champion with the 2023 Michigan football team, who posted 10 sacks last season, was drafted by the Detroit Lions with the 44th overall selection.
Michigan football fans will love Derrick Moore's NFL draft destination
This pick is fitting for a few reasons. For starters, the Lions have been searching for a quality pass rusher opposite of Aidan Hutchinson since he was drafted. It's been a bit of a revolving door, something Moore can stop.
The All-Big Ten selection finished his career with 24.5 career tackles for loss to go along with 20 sacks. He also wound up with 62 solo tackles and eight pass breakups.
Moore took his game to another level over the past two seasons. The former top-50 overall recruit was a contributor from his freshman season onward. He's a perfect fit for the Lions system, too.
Moore is good enough to play EDGE in 3-4 system, but a 4-3, where he can play with his hand in the dirt, is a better fit for Moore, who should have an instant impact next season.
The Lions needed to address the pass rush. They added an offensive lineman in the first round, so Moore fits a need. He was a great value, and with Aidan Hutchinson on the other side of the field, Moore has a great chance to excel early in his NFL career.
Michigan's seven-year streak with a first-round pick was snapped on Thursday, but even in a down year, the Wolverines still had an EDGE come off the board in round two.
