Michigan football fans might be annoyed at the latest comments of Bryce Underwood, unless they listened to the entire interview.
Underwood was at a youth football camp this past week, when a reporter asked Underwood a series of questions about himself and the upcoming season.
Of course, part of the interview was clipped. That's fine. The problem is that it was completely taken out of context by the media and rival fans.
Underwood, the former No. 1 overall recruit in the 2025 class, said he thought he was the best player to come out of Michigan when asked what he wanted to prove this year. However, if you listen to the entire answer, instead of the clipped part that has been circling the internet, it was fine.
"I want to prove to myself that I am what I think I am," Underwood said. "I feel like I'm the best player to ever come out of Michigan. Now, I need to show it."
If you listen to the entire interview, it's not nearly what some people are trying to make it out to be. In fact, it's the kind of confidence you would want in a five-star QB.
What’s the expectation for the team this year?
— Chuck (@CFBChuckk) July 3, 2026
- Winning.
What are your personal goals?
- Whatever the team needs to win.
Do you need to tone down your interviews from the past?
- It’s just time to move forward.
How do you respond to scrutiny?
- I’ll let the game speak in… https://t.co/97zgNAhSzG pic.twitter.com/4z9Sq0m3qG
"Winning," Underwood also said. "That's the main goal. Whatever I can do to win, that's what we're going to do."
That sounds like a quarterback who is ready and willing to run the ball more this season, which is an exciting prospect for Michigan football fans after the previous coaching staff was ultra conservative when it came to letting Underwood utilize his legs.
Bryce Underwood's goals are all about Michigan football winning
When asked what his personal goals for this season were, Underwood said: "Whatever my team needs in order to win."
Did Underwood need to say he's the best player ever to come out of Michigan? Maybe not, but I have zero problem with his confidence. He also said all the right things throughout this interview. He is the top-ranked player to come out of Michigan, and has the accolades to back it up as a high school quarterback.
Now, Underwood needs to show why he deserves that honor in a Michigan uniform. Dante Moore is a great example of how a freshman can struggle, but still be great. It's easy to say Moore is better than Underwood now, but Bryce was better as a freshman.
In a few years, the conversation may have changed completely.
