Kyle Whittingham's latest description of John Henry Daley should terrify opposing quarterbacks

Michigan football head coach Kyle Whittingham met with the media on Monday ahead of the Wolverines season-opening game against Western Michigan.

Whittingham had some interesting things to say. He talked about how Bryce Underwood was "remarkably" better than he was during the spring.

The first-year Michigan football head coach also talked about three players who saw their stock "really, really rise" during fall camp.

Whittingham also spoke about his prized pass rusher, John Henry Daley. The preseason first-team All-American, who had 11.5 sacks and 17.5 tackles for loss last season for the Utah Utes, is "probably more explosive and quicker than he’s ever been," according to Whittingham.

That should be a worrisome thought for the rest of the Big Ten. It's also something that should have Michigan football fans salivating at the thought of the Wolverines pass rush.

It's not just about Henry Daley either. Nate Marshall, a former top-50 overall recruit, is one of the players that Whittingham talked about raising his stock. Outside of Henry Daley, he might be the best pass rusher on the team this season.

Carter Meadows has also received plenty of positive buzz. It's hard to know what impact a freshman will have until we see it, though. Sometimes, those players are more ready to play than you think, and sometimes, it's the other way around. Meadows, a 5-star recruit, is listed as 6-foot-7, 252, though.

Whittingham also repeated something he has said since this spring: That the defensive line was going to be a strength of the Michigan football team.

If that ends up being true, this team will have a chance to play for championships come November and hopefully, December. The last time Michigan won a championship when it wasn't expected to, the defensive line was the strength of the team. The offensive line was great on that 2021 Michigan football team, too.

Yet, the Wolverines had Aidan Hutchinson, Mazi Smith, and David Ojabo up front. That pass rush was lethal. It's the reason Michigan beat Ohio State, along with the fact that the Buckeyes couldn't stop Hassan Haskins.

Bryce Underwood will have to do his part. The same is true for the offensive line, the running backs, and the wide receviers. But a great defense starts with a great defensive line.

Derrick Moore met that standard last season. The rest of the group, outside of maybe Trey Pierce, just didn't. Injuries were part of it. So if Michigan can get back to dominating up front, led by Henry Daley on the edge, that's a great place to start as far as winning championships is concerned.
