Kyle Whittingham is one of a kind. The dude is 66 and hasn't missed a workout in years. With the new Michigan football head coach, age really is just a number.
Whittingham stepped down from Utah after the season. He called himself a free agent. Soon after, Sherrone Moore was fired, which created the perfect storm to bring one of the best college football head coaches to Ann Arbor.
“I’d have been pissed off at myself down the road had I not taken the job,” Whittingham said via Matt Hayes of USA Today.
After an incredible career at Utah that featured three conference championships, a perfect season after a Sugar Bowl win over Alabama, and a successful upscale of the Utes from mid-major to Power-4 program, Whittingham knew Michigan football offered something different: The chance to win a national championship.
That's why Whittingam took the job, sight unseen, according to USA Today Sports.
“Didn’t need to see it,” Whittingham told USA TODAY Sports. “Knew what it was, knew the challenge, wanted the challenge.”
Michigan football offers Kyle Whittingham the ultimate challenge
It wasn't just about a team with a talented freshman quarterback. Whittingham has never had all the resources Michigan has to offer. Now, he leads a program that was at the pinnacle just three years ago (two seasons).
A poorly-coached Michigan team won nine games last season. Even coming off a flawed season, Michigan has more talent than Whittingham ever had with the Utes. Heck, he brought the players worthy of playing for Michigan to Michigan.
For the first time in his career, Whittingham won't have to do more with less. Instead, he will have one of the best rosters in the sport every season that he's Michigan football head coach. The Wolverines have a playoff roster this season. It's up to Whittingham to get them there.
That's the expectation. That's why he took the job. At Utah, there was always a ceiling. With Michigan, there isn't, which is why Kyle Whittingham wanted to be the head coach.
