The Michigan football season starts next week…on live television, against Western Michigan. The matchup may not garner the glitz and glamour of other marquee matchups, but the truth of the matter is that the Wolverines are under the national microscope as soon as the clock ticks.
If Kyle Whittingham is the guy…the guy to change the national perspective surrounding the University of Michigan, then it starts with the first snap against Western Michigan. If Kyle Whittingham is the guy…then Bryce Underwood is due to have an even better campaign than he did last year, with measurable growth. If Kyle Whittingham is the guy… then one of the most uninspiring offenses in the Big Ten will change that narrative as soon as possible. And if Kyle Whittingham really is the guy…then the departures of Sherrone Moore, Dusty May, and the upcoming (but seemingly not fast enough) departure of Warde Manuel will be overshadowed by a team on the field relishing in success.
If Kyle Whittingham is the guy, then the Michigan Wolverines will return to a place where the national media will welcome them with open arms and not ditch them to the corner with the likes of Lane Kiffin. If Whittingham is the guy, then starting the season ranked at 16, will be a stepping stone to a possible College Football Playoff bid.
Kyle Whittingham has to be the guy for Michigan football
In lack of other words, Kyle Whittingham must be the right guy. There is no room for errors. There is no room for lackluster. There is no room for even games against Western Michigan to be taken lightly. And in the second week, against the Oklahoma Sooners…there is no room for looking overshadowed by the moment.
If Whittingham is not the guy…then the question has to be asked, are the Wolverines under a bout of bad luck, or are all those in charge of decisions in Ann Arbor, really taking the best interest of the fans at heart, or their pockets?
For the sake of Ann Arbor, Kyle Whittingham better be the guy.
