Kansas learning what Michigan basketball fans already knew about Hunter Dickinson

Kansas fans are sick of Hunter Dickinson but as a Michigan basketball fan, I could have told you two years ago the juice wasn't worth the squeeze.

Kansas basketball fans were stoked when they landed former Michigan basketball center Hunter Dickinson in the transfer portal ahead of the 2023-24 season.

But now, as Dickinson nears the end of his second season with the Jayhawks, it seems like Kansas basketball fans can't wait for his time with the program to end.

Kansas fans get buyer's remorse on Hunter Dickinson

Last season, Dickinson was All-Big 12 and an All-American. He's always been an elite scorer, but he doesn't defend well. He's improved as a shot blocker but he has always been a liability on defense and that will never change. He's 7-foot-2 and can't move.

Dickinson is an old-school center but he's even more irrelevant. Low-post scoring is nice, but when you allow as many buckets as you score, how valuable are you really?

The numbers look great. But the result with Hunter Dickinson will always be the same. He cares more about himself than he does about winning, as evidenced by his numerous stunts with Michigan basketball, such as wearing a mask on the road at Wisconsin.

It wasn't surprising when Dickinson left Michigan basketball. At the time, I called it addition via subtraction. I believed it then and believe it even more now. Even if Hunter Dickinson could have been on this Michigan basketball team, I wouldn't want him.

Kansas fans are over him too. Some called him the "most unathletic" player of the Bill Self era. Many others shared things like, "Kansas basketball will be fine, as soon as Hunter Dickinson leaves." The Jayhawks, of course, are middling in the Big 12 and just lost to BYU by 40 points.

Kansas is 8-8 in the Big 12. Dickinson is putting up big numbers but they are empty, just like at Michigan. Dickinson is a net negative. He was for Michigan basketball and now, the Kansas Jayhawks are learning a painful lesson.

The juice isn't always worth the squeeze and Dickinson wasn't worth the NIL money that Kansas paid him. He might be the most overpaid player in all of college basketball.

It's also fitting that Michigan basketball is trending toward another Big Ten title without him, actually in a better place with a guy like Vlad Goldin, than when he was with the program.
