Joe Craddock is perfect candidate to be Michigan football OC
When Sherrone Moore was talking about what he wants in an offensive coordinator on Wednesday, it felt like he was talking about current Tulane offensive coordinator Joe Craddock.
Craddock is an experienced OC. He's been the offensive coordinator at SMU, Arkansas, Troy, and Tulane. Over the past three seasons, he's really hit his stride.
Troy had an explosive offense. The Trojans were among the leaders in explosive passing plays in 2022 and 2023. Whether it was passing plays of 20, 30, 40, or 50 yards or more, the Trojans were among the most consistent at producing them.
"Explosive and balanced"
Craddock is also a dude who loves to run the ball. Sherrone Moore talked about wanting to be "explosive and balanced." Craddock's teams have been that. Tulane has run the ball on 52 percent of their snaps this season, run a lot of play-action, and run power extremely well.
Power has been a staple over the years for Michigan football and according to A to Z Sports, the Green Wave have averaged 8.1 yards per attempt on God's play this season.
It all fits. Michigan football wants to be explosive with Bryce Underwood and take shots down field. But the best offenses are able to marry the run and pass game. If Underwood is able to play-action pass, with a successful run game, it will be game over for defenses.
Think the Green Bay Packers or Los Angeles Rams when you think scheme. There's a lot of stuff in the gun and the pistol, but that's nothing new for Michigan football.
Craddock hasn't had the chance to develop a quarterback like Bryce Underwood. But Tulane is playing with a redshirt freshamn, after losing a QB to the NFL draft and is 8th in the nation in scoring offense.
That's a promising sign. There could be other names that emerge and Brian Griese is one I'd love. But Craddock checks a lot of boxes and that stuck out to me listening to Sherrone Moore talk about what he wants to see in the next Michigan football offensive coordinator.
