Michigan football fans are excited about what the new offense could look like under Jason Beck this season, and the good news is that the players are excited, too.
Brice Marich of The Michigan Insider posted on X about how Michigan football players "have raved" about the offensive system installed by Beck. He also said he is "expecting to see much more of a balanced attack this fall."
Over the years, Michigan fans have been sold a lot of fancy new offenses. We can all remember "speed in space" only to see the same-old conservative offense.
Part of that was Jim Harbaugh. He's wired to run the football. Kyle Whittingham is, too. That's why some still question if Michigan is really going to open up and throw the ball.
Five-star recruiting target Dakota Guerrant mentioned the offense as one of his biggest concerns about committing to the Wolverines. That will be difficult to overcome, at least until the season starts, but it does feel like the Wolverines are going to be more fun to watch on offense.
For starters, they won't be so conservative.
Michigan offense won't play scared anymore
By that, I don't mean throwing the ball or running it. I'm talking about the way the Michigan football coaching staff held back Bryce Underwood. He should have been allowed to use his legs, to play freely, and be allowed to make plays.
Instead, it felt like coaches coached him to not make a mistake, to be cautious when running. Obviously, every player has to be careful, but you can't play scared, and that was Michigan's offense last season.
That won't be the case in 2026. Underwood is going to be unleashed. Michigan has adequate QB depth, but more than that, the Wolverines aren't going to play scared anymore.
Utah ran the ball 44 times per game last season compared to 28 passes per game. Yet, the offense averaged 482 yards per game, with 216 coming through the air. Devion Dampier had 24 touchdown passes compared to five interceptions, along with 835 rushing yards. Dampier was one of two quarterbacks to rush for over 500 yards.
That doesn't mean we will see two quarterbacks running the ball that much this fall for Michigan. It's just a sign that Beck knows how to use his players.
It's going to be fun to see what Beck can do with not just Underwood, but the entire offense. Andrew Marsh. J.J. Buchanan, Savion Hiter. The talent is different, and based on that feedback from the players, this offense is going to be notably different. too.
