There have been some crazy things to happen when it comes to The Game between Michigan and Ohio State. From flag planting, to fights breaking out on the field to police having to get involved, the Buckeyes just took it to a whole different level, and it is only August.
The Game has gotten quite a bit of national attention lately, with both sides making their respective comments, but Ohio State definitely just added to the craziness. The Buckeyes dropped their game themes on social media on Friday afternoon, and quickly, fans started to notice something very out of place.
Instead of Senior Day being celebrated on the last home game of the season, as it is every single season, which just so happens to be when Michigan comes to town, it will now be held on the first home game of the season...against Ball State. Don't worry about rubbing your eyes and wondering if you read that right, because you did.
Ohio State will no longer celebrate Senior Day before they take the field against Michigan in November, and if you ask me, it sure does sound like the Buckeyes are scared of sending their seniors out on a loss against Michigan on Senior Day.
If The Game is a 'livelihood' for Ohio State, the Senior Day move doesn't back that up
When On3 visited Ohio State during training camp, of course, one of the questions asked of Buckeyes quarterback Julian Sayin was about all the talk of this rivalry with Michigan. While some believe Kyle Whittingham and Bryce Underwood are downplaying it, Sayin tried to make it seem like it is the only thing Ohio State thinks about.
"You learn very quickly when you get here [Ohio State], you learn the history of that game, how important it is to this state and to this fanbase," Sayin said. "It becomes your livelihood."
Well, if the game is so important, the rivalry is practically a livelihood in Columbus, then why not send the seniors out on the biggest game of the year? Why give them a celebration during the Ball State game? Is it because the Buckeyes feel way better about winning that game than they do against Michigan? If that is the case, that sounds like Ohio State is pretty scared of the Wolverines.
Ohio State head coach Ryan Day is only 2-4 against Michigan in his time leading the Buckeyes, having only broken the four-game losing streak last season. Whittingham has yet to coach against the Buckeyes in this rivalry series, but he isn't making any sort of changes other than worrying about the matchup when the time is right.
While there has been no real explanation as to why athletic director Ross Bjork decided to move Senior Day, which is celebrated on the last home game of the season by literally every other school and in every other sport, it has Ohio State being spooked by Michigan this year written all over it.
