Michigan’s 52-17 win over UTEP feels like fool’s gold. That may be hyperbole considering the margin of victory for the Wolverines but their frustrating start to the beginning of the game showed a cause for concern.
Whether it was an emotional letdown from the week before defeating a ranked Oklahoma team in Ann Arbor or if it was that the Wolverines didn’t take UTEP that seriously, starting the game off with two turnovers is not the way Michigan football should go about business.
Who is this Michigan football team?
This team is the same team that only beat Western Michigan after a Hail Mary touchdown, only due to a controversial call by officials. If you let Western Michigan tell it, or perhaps the NCAA, Western Michigan is the true winner of that game. Or are the Wolverines that beat the Sooners a week after, with a smothering defense, who they truly are? How are we to know?
The beginning against UTEP did nothing to define who the Wolverines are. And yes, they won the game but being 3-0 feels like just a number. For 3-0, the Wolverines don’t strike you as a playoff team necessarily, but what do they strike you as?
Kyle Whittingham came in after a tumultuous time in Ann Arbor. He was supposed to create balance for a program that had drastically fallen off its way. In some ways, to start the season, maybe he has created balance but not necessarily in all ways.
Before the game against Oklahoma, Whittingham sounded barely committed to Bryce Underwood as the Wolverines' quarterback. One game into the season…and he was barely committal to his starting quarterback. Three games into the season, and the Wolverines don’t seem to have an identity. Who is the leader of this team?
Yes, the Michigan Wolverines are 3-0. But there is still something about this team that gives a reason for pause.
