How Michigan football QB Davis Warren has improved since his last start
By Cullen Corr
Michigan Football might have picked up their most important win of the season last Saturday. The Wolverines avoided falling to 4-4 with a loss to one of their biggest rivals and instead moved to 5-3 with a lot of momentum heading into some big matchups down the stretch.
Maybe just as importantly, the Wolverines got their best quarterback play of the season in the 24-17 victory. Alex Orji provided a nice spark off the bench while Davis Warren looked like the QB everyone was hoping Michigan football could find coming into the season.
I'm not going to say that he's cemented himself as the answer or the next great starting quarterback at Michigan but Saturday was certainly a big step in the right direction. So here's how Davis and the rest of the offense have improved since the last time he was out there as well as what it means going forward.
Creativity and Offensive Line Play
Not to undermine what Warren did, but the creativity of the offense and the play of the offensive line certainly helped a lot. Kirk Campbell has been facing a lot of criticism the past few weeks for how stale this unit is. He emptied the bag by calling several trick plays to help get the offense going and get the Spartans on their heels. He also did a tramendous job scheming guys open and giving Davis Warren some easy throws. The timing of calls was as good as it's been all season. This is going to have to continue if Campbell wants to tamper the uncertainty around his role as Offensive Coordinator beyond this season, but Saturday was a flash of what he can do.
The offensive line was also the best we've seen all year. Michigan State sold out to bring pressure and stop the run. Not only did the offensive line not allow a sack all day, but they also opened up running lanes for Alex Orji when the MSU defense knew it was coming. The group is finally growing the way everyone expected under Sherrone Moore.
