Gut reactions to Michigan basketball win over Tarleton State
It's not always going to look pretty when you have as many new players as Michigan basketball does, but despite some struggles, the Wolverines cruised to a 72-49 win on Thursday night against Tarleton State at Crisler.
It wasn't enough to cover the 31.5-point spread against a team ranked outside the top 300 in the Kenpom rankings. Tarleton State even had the lead late in the first half before Sam Walters went on an 8-0 spurt that helped Michigan basketball build a 40-30 at the half.
Michigan basketball then scored the first 10 points in the second half which essentially put the game on ice. The Wolverines didn't shoot the ball well from 3-point range. They also allowed the Texans to dictate the tempo. Michigan doesn't want to play games with 101 combined points.
Roddy Gayle had 16 points in the win and was 6-of-7 from the field. Tre Donaldson added 13 points and five assists, while Vlad Goldin contributed with 12 points and three boards.
Surely, Michigan wants and needs to play better but here are the gut reactions from a 23-point win.
Gut reactions from Michigan basketball win
- The Wolverines only had 10 turnovers and did a better job of taking care of the ball. Tarleton isn't doesn't want to play a ton of possessions.
- The Texans made six 3-pointers just like Michigan but they only attempted 12 from beyond the arc, which was a credit to Michigan's defense.
- Michigan only allowed four offensive rebounds, which was another positive.
- The Wolverines only allowed four assists. That's why the Texas only got off 12 3-pointers. The offense wasn't perfect but the defense was solid.
- This team needs a challenge and Virginia Tech will provide it. These games feel boring for fans and players.
- If Roddy Gayle can hit 3s, he can be All-Big Ten.
- Sam Walters is fun to watch when he gets hot.
- Go Blue!
