Gut reactions: Michigan basketball blows another lead, refs don't help

Michigan basketball lost a third game this season after having a double-digit lead.

If there was one problem for Michigan basketball outside of turnovers, it's the fact that the Wolverines are terrible at closing out opponents.

The Wolverines are 8-3 after their one-point loss to Oklahoma on Wednesday night, 87-86. Oklahoma benefited from maybe the weakest 3-point foul in college basketball history -- the dude fell on his own and wasn't even touched.

On the other end, Vlad Golden got shoved while trying to get an offensive rebound for an attempt at a put-back. He should have been shooting free throws at least.

Both of those things are true, but so is the fact that in all three losses this season, Michigan basketball has held a double-digit lead. The Wolverines were up by 13 points against Wake Forest before losing by two. They led Arkansas by 15 before losing by two, and U-M was up on Oklahoma 11 points in the second before falling apart and losing by one, in heartbreaking fashion.

Goldin was dominant in the loss with 26 points and 10 rebounds, two assist and two blocks. He was 10-of-12 from the field, inclduing a fadeaway to beat the shot clock, and 6-of-7 from the free throw line. Danny Wolf had 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting, 10 rebounds and five assists. Roddy Gayle added 15 and Trey Donaldson finished with 14 .

Michigan only had 10 turnovers and also pulled down 14 offensive rebounds compared to nine. But they shot 14 percent (4-of-28) from 3-point range, while Oklahoma hit 12 3-pointers, including the last one by Jeremiah Fears. It was a brutal loss and my only gut reaction is that this team needs to learn how to finish games.

It should be 11-0 with a top-10 ranking and one of the best resumes in college basketball but it hasn't figured out how to play with a lead against quality teams, and that's an issue.
