Michigan basketball head coach Dusty May met with the media on Wednesday and dropped some key information on the 2026-27 roster.

May didn't want to comment on Aday Mara or Morez Johnson. There's still a chance, especially with Johnson, that he could return. The door is open. It feels unlikely, though.

With his two bigs leaving for the NBA, May landed two of the best in the transfer portal: Moustapha Thiam and J.P. Estrella. The backcourt is settled with Elliot Cadeau and Trey McKenney. The frontcourt is settled, too, unless Johnson decides to return.

Michigan fans have speculated who the starting three could be for the Wolverines. May dropped some hints about who it could be.

Dusty May drops major hint about 2026-27 starting lineup

The one thing May did say is that five-star signee Brandon McCoy, who officially joined the Wolverines earlier this week, will be a "major contributor."

That's not surprising. The 6-foot-5 guard is known as an elite defender. He's listed by 247 Sports as a combo guard. He might handle the ball in some situations, but could also be in the starting lineup as part of what's essentially a three-guard lineup.

May has started four guards before. McCoy is also 6-foot-5 with length. He's switchable and can guard some fours in a pinch. His offense is developing, but May called him a three-level scorer when he signed with the Michigan basketball program.

It feels like McCoy is a viable candidate to start, or at least play the same role that Trey McKenney did last season.

The other hint dropped by May was that the Wolverines are still looking at the portal. May said Michigan was "gathering information" with a couple of portal players, so the Wolverines, "might not be done."

Another big wouldn't shock me. Someone with high upside who can come off the bench. A starting-caliber wing is the biggest need, though. McCoy could step into that role, but maybe he won't have to.
