After a stellar Spring Game performance, Michigan football fans are eagerly awaiting to see if Jalen Hoffman has what it takes to take over for Colston Loveland. Despite just being a sophomore, Hoffman had himself a day in the Michigan Wolverines spring game, catching all seven of his targets for 148 yards and a touchdown, the only receiving touchdown of the entire game.
When asked who he thought the MVP of the Spring Game was, Coach Sherrone Moore went on to say, "Probably Hoffman... Jalen has really picked ip his game... and he's a super athletic kid with really great ball skills and hands. He's a guy we definitely look forward to watching in the season."
Can Jalen Hoffman be Michigan football's top tight end in 2025?
Perhaps the most surprising fact about Hoffman's journey is that he came to Ann Arbor as a preferred walk-on back in December of 2022. By 2024, he was recognized as a sophomore contributing on special teams and earned his letter.
Even with a spectacular showing, Hoffman still has much to prove to earn the starting job. Marlin Klein and Hogan Hansen are seen as the consensus top tight ends at this point, although nothing has been made official and likely won't be until after fall camp.
I don't know if Hoffman will earn the starting job this year, but I think he will definitely be a contender in the years to come. I only say this due to the lack of knowledge we have. The kid has the speed, athleticism, and work ethic, as evidenced by earning a scholarship, which will pay great dividends to this Michigan football team. I do think he will steal some reps in fall practice and will almost certainly see the field this fall.
