If the Michigan football team wins out, the Wolverines will make the College Football Playoff. A 10-2 season with a win over Ohio State would be more than enough to get the Wolverines into the 12-team playoff.
That's especially true when comparing some of Michigan's wins to other elite college football programs. Michigan might not have a top-25 win, although Washington should have been ranked and still deserves consideration; still, its resume is in the same category as some of the elite programs in college football this season.
Michigan's resume is in elite company
According to Cody Kellner, Michgan football is one of just four teams in college football this season to have beaten at least four FBS teams with winning records. The Wolverines have beaten two teams that are 6-2 -- Washington and Nebraska. New Mexico and Central Michigan are also 5-3.
That has Michigan football tied with Alabama for third-most wins (4) over FBS teams with winning records. Ohio State and Indiana top the list with five each. That's impressive company to keep.
It's also a sign that the Wolverines College Football Playoff is plenty strong, assuming they win out. Nebraska and USC face each other this week. Either result will help U-M. USC will look stronger if they win, mitigating Michigan's loss in LA somewhat, or the win over Nebraska will look even better.
After this week, Michigan football fans should be cheering hard for USC, Washington, and Nebraska to win as many games as possible. New Mexico winning more in the Mountain West wouldn't hurt either.
This stat is also a reminder that maybe Michigan football fans should take a breath about Sherrone Moore. Some have been frustrated by his coaching performance, even in wins.
Yet, Moore is 14-7 overall. He's 2-0 against Michigan State and has proven he can beat the Buckeyes. Michigan football is trending in the right direction. Let's not forget that.
