Michigan football might have the best freshman in college football this season, Bryce Underwood. But could he have a similar impact to that of Ohio State freshman Jeremiah Smith in 2024?

It was a question posed to Fox College Football writers, and Michael Cohen's answer was Bryce Underwood.

Smith helped the Buckeyes win a national championship last season. He also made a major impact, as did Alabama wideout Ryan Williams.

However, Williams' team didn't make the College Football Playoff. Smith is probably the best player in college football.

Underwood might not have the same impact, but it could be close, especially if he lives up to the recruiting ranking.

On3 has rated him as the best quarterback of the past five years. Underwood has been compared to Vince Young and Cam Newton. If he delivers on that promise, Cohen's prediction could come true.

Michigan was a quarterback away from being a playoff team last season. The defense lost some key pieces but still dominated against Alabama, one of the best offenses in college football last season.

Add a quarterback to that elite defense, and a running game, and you could have a playoff team. Playing quarterback is a different animal. The learning curve could slow down the development slightly this season but by October or November, the game should start slowing down.

Underwood is an elite passer but can run, too. People often overlook that, but it's another reason he could make such a big impact as a freshman.

We'll see if his impact is anywhere near Smith's in the 2025 season, but if it is, that will be a great thing for Michigan football fans.
