Raise your hand if you believed the hype Michigan was selling in the offseason and all throughout fall camp? Don't worry, I am raising my hand too, and don't I feel pretty stupid now. Yes, Michigan took down Western Michigan in impossible fashion.
The game was over, but the refs put a second back on the clock?! This game was over, but Bryce Underwood put the ball on the money for JJ Buchanan to come down with. Credit to them for that play, but come on, there's nothing to feel great about right now, especially with the play of Underwood.
There was a lot of negative attention around Underwood this offseason, the loudest coming from former Utah star and NFL legend Eric Weddle. While many, including myself, came down on Weddle for his comments on Underwood, saying he was simply wrong and needed to give him time to show he has improved, maybe Weddle was onto something.
In case you forgot, here are Weddle's comments after a visit to Michigan with his son.
"Don’t be surprised if the backup’s playing early because that Underwood kid, I don’t think he can throw or play quarterback," Weddle said on the "Zero 2 Sixty" podcast.
Could we realistically see Tommy Carr this season and Bryce Underwood on the bench?
It seems like a silly question, but when Michigan was a 27.5-point favorite over Western Michigan and didn't do a single thing on offense after the first drive, it is one that should be asked. Yes, they won, but take away the miracle ending, plus the extra second back on the clock, and there's nothing to celebrate. The main job for Underwood is to run the offense effectively, and he looked at times worse than he did last season.
Underwood needed to show progression, not regression. The footwork was sloppy, Underwood couldn't get through his reads, couldn't read what defense was being thrown at him, didn't use his legs when he should have, and, most importantly, didn't take care of the ball when it mattered most.

If Underwood can't do his basic job, maybe Whittingham should give Tommy Carr a chance? At this point, what would it hurt? Carr is unproven, but he would at least be a change of pace for Michigan. The biggest fear is that he had good buzz coming out of fall camp, and at this point, it is hard to believe what is true coming from this coaching staff.
Michigan is paying Underwood way too much in NIL money for him to perform like this, and at this point, he is heading into 5-star bust territory. Weddle was clearly onto something after his visit to Ann Arbor, and now Michigan will have to face a very tough 2026 schedule after nearly blowing it vs. Western Michigan. Underwood finishing with 170 passing yards, one interception, and one costly fumble late in the fourth quarter was awful to see. He's not living up to the 5-star hype, and Michigan's campaign could be heading south sooner rather than later unless he wakes up, and fast.
