Bryce Underwood has been a hot topic of conversation as the Michigan football season approaches. It's fair to say that the Wolverines will go as the sophomore quarterback goes this season.
The 6-foot-4, 225-pound signal-caller, who was ranked as the No. 1 overall prospect in the 2025 class, in addition to being the top-ranked quarterback, has a lot to prove after an up-and-down freshman season that didn't quite meet the high expectations.
Part of the reason the expectations were so high in the first place was Underwood. He talked the talk, but didn't necessarily walk the walk.
College football will do that to talented freshman. Dante Moore got served a plate of humble pie when he was a true freshman, too.
Underwood needs to play better. He also wasn't put in the best position by the previous coaching staff, which didn't even provide the 18-year-old freshman with a dedicated QB coach.
Kyle Whittingham rectified that mistake. Michigan offensive coordinator Jason Beck is also known for doing wonders with quarterbacks. At least he did with Devon Dampier from Utah last season.
Bryce Underwood keeps doing all the right things for Michigan football
Underwood has drawn praise throughout the offseason for his improvement. He has looked stellar so far in fall camp, although Michigan football fans only get a limited look through social media highlights. It might not show the full picture.
One thing that helps, though, is the fact that Underwood was selected as a Michigan football captain. Usually, the players vote on those roles, and if so, that's a big step forward for Bryce. His teammates believe in him, which only reinforces the kind of leader he has become.
Rod Moore, Jordan Marshall, and Trey Pierce were the other captains. Whittingham also has a leadership council, which he has used for years with success at Utah. The coaching and leadership weren't good enough last season. That's been corrected.
It feels like Underwood is on the right path, too. He has tried his best to say the right things this offseason. It's clear he wants to prove himself. The kid is confident, but he has also endeared himself to his teamamtes and his coaches through his development, and his hard work.
Whittingham said that Underwood wants to be great as badly as anyone he has ever coached, and Underwood being named captain is another sign that the young quarterback is doing everything he can to be great.
