Bryce Underwood isn't acting like a quarterback playing for his starting spot at Michigan

So either Bryce Underwood doesn't listen to Kyle Whittingham's press conferences, or he is simply out of the loop on how his head coach is feeling about his starting position as Michigan's quarterback.

Earlier in the week, after the struggle bus performance from Michigan, and mainly Underwood against Western Michigan, Whittingham was candid about where Underwood stands as the starter. As of right now, Underwood will be the starter, but Whittingham said it isn't infinite, hinting that there could be a change if his level of play doesn't improve.

When Underwood faced the media on Wednesday, the first time since the game on Saturday, Whittingham's comments were unsurprisingly brought up. Underwood, again, either doesn't have a good poker face and truly didn't know about Whittingham's comments, or it seems like he just doesn't care about them.

"There were comments about that?" Underwood said. "That's cool. I didn't see that. It's cool."

Well, Underwood's response to hearing Whittingham's, whether he actually knew about them already or not, is pretty troubling. First of all, his age and immaturity really shine through in his answer. Instead of advocating for his starting position, or at least talking about what he is working on to improve his play this week, he brushes off the comments and gives a very lackluster answer.

Underwood is now in his second season at Michigan after starting all 13 games for the Wolverines last season. Sure, he led his team to a 9-4 record with a loss to Texas in the Cheez-It Orange Bowl, but his numbers left fans and those in the media wondering if his recruiting hype was all for nothing.

It is not like Michigan doesn't have a viable option behind Underwood, with freshman Michigan legacy Tommy Carr waiting in the wings. Carr won the backup QB battle in fall camp, battling against Colorado State transfer Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi. Carr has been the only other quarterback taking snaps with the 1s, with it being reported as an 80-20 split on starter snaps in practice between Underwood and Carr.

Underwood may want to show a little more sense of urgency when it comes to his starting role because if Whittingham doesn't see improvement, he doesn't seem to be someone who is afraid to make the change. If Underwood thinks his position is safe no matter what, he may have another thing coming.

Oklahoma will be a big test for Underwood, facing a tough SEC defense, tougher than the one Western Michigan showed. Could we see Carr in his game if Underwood doesn't step it up?
