Bryce Underwood hasn't won the Michigan starting QB job yet

Michigan football OC Chip Lindsey offered some updates on the Wolverines QB battle on Saturday.

Michigan football held its first padded practice on Saturday, and afterward, both coordinators, Wink Martindale and Chip Lindsey met with the media.

Martindale said some interesting stuff. He mostly praised the defense but didn't say anyhing too earth shattering.

Lindsey, the play-caller for Michigan football on offense this season, didn't either, outside of some comments he made about the Wolverines' QB battle.

Bryce Underwood, the five-star freshman, is competing against Mikey Keene, a Fresno State transfer, to be the starter. Jake Garcia, who played for ECU last season, was also added to the room this summer, along with former four-star quarterback Jadyn Davis.

Lindsey praised all of the quarterbacks who are competing for the job, but said that Underwood was clearly a "football junkie." He said that the Wolverines want to name a starting quarterback, "as soon as possible."

Mikey Keene could still win the starting job

Lindsey didn't rule out Keene winning the job. Michigan's OC mentioned that Keene "was coming along" and could still "win the job." His familiarity with the system will also help him overcome missing the spring in the eyes of the veteran coach.

Lindsey said that the coaching staff wanted Jake Garcia for "depth." He's not in the mix to be the starter, at least according to what was said on Saturday. It feels like, reading between the lines, that Underwood is still the guy. I'd expect him to be named the starter sooner rather than later.

We'll see if Keene makes it a true competition, though. Underwood should have to earn it. Lindsey said the player who makes the other guys better will be the starting quarterback. In other words, the best quarterback will play.

Based on the spring, the prediction is that it will be Underwood. Soon enough, we'll know one way or another.
