After a wild couple of weeks, Michigan football course corrected on Friday by hiring Kyle Whittingham to be its 22nd head coach.
Whittingham wasn't the dream candidate that some Michigan football fans wanted, but he was the best coach available and a proven winner, with conference titles and an undefeated season on his resume.
Whittingham has always done more with less at Utah. What will he be able to do with more at Michigan?
That's one of the reasons to like this hire. Before we judge it though, we have to see how Whittingham does with roster building.
On that front, the most important question about Kyle Whittingham is whether or not he can retain the five-star quarterback who started all games 12 for Michigan as a true freshman.
No one is saying that Bryce Underwood's camp had anything to do with the hire, but it would be naive to think they didn't have some knowledge of it.
The vibes have been good so far. Underwood was with the team in Orlando for the Citrus Bowl, which was a good sign about his future.
However, another was his positive reaction to the hire of Kyle Whittingham. Underwood posted the announcement on his Instagram account, which seems to suggest that he endorses the move.

Jason Beck is a name to know for the offensive coordinator job. He oversaw an offense that ranked 5th in college football scoring. As a team, Utah had 25 touchdown passes. The system should work even better if Underwood is the quarterback.
That's why keeping Underwood is surely a top priority.
