AP Top 25 voters didn't buy Michigan's non-loss to WMU by completely dropping the Wolverines

Michigan was bound to fall in the AP Top 25 after it took a miracle to beat Western Michigan. Let me say that again...WESTERN MICHIGAN. However, the Wolverines did more than just drop a few spots; the voters took them out of the rankings altogether.

The Wolverines were ranked No. 16 to start the season, and sure, the performance against the Broncos was horrific, but they still walked away with the win. Instead, Michigan only got 69 votes in the AP poll, effectively ranking them No. 28 behind Florida and Boise State.

Now, I know I have been one to come down pretty hard on Michigan after the Week 1 performance, but this is even tougher on the Wolverines: dropping 12 spots, falling out of the rankings, and not even having the most receiving votes. Michigan didn't look good, but in some ways, this feels like more of a slight against Western Michigan.

The Broncos won the MAC last season and returned nearly their entire roster. They put up 12 points on a Michigan defense that was on the field for over 40 minutes and had to hold things down for an offense that couldn't do anything. Western Michigan played that game to win and would have if not for one final second being added. Michigan played a good Group of Six team and still won in the end. Being ranked No. 25 wouldn't have been the worst thing in the world for the AP voters to do.

Michigan has a lot of work to do to get back int he good graces of the AP voters

Michigan was the only team to drop out of the AP 25 after Week 1, and they were previously ranked No. 16, so a pretty significant drop.

Let's face it, Michigan was the biggest story of the weekend, and that is even a big competition to win with Florida State having a power outage in their stadium casuing over and hour long delay. Michigan looked horrible, but really it was the offense that looked bad.

The defense did its job. If there is one hire Kyle Whittingham hit out of the park on, it is defense coordinator Jay Hill. It is the offense and the playcalling of Jason Beck that seriously need to turn things around in Week 2, not just to get everything back on track and hopefully get a win, but to get back in the good graces of the AP voters.

The voters clearly didn't buy the "well, at least we won" act from Michigan. If the Wolverines blow out Western Michigan, we are having a completely different conversation right now, probably one previewing a Top 15 matchup between Michigan and Oklahoma.

Instead, now it's a ranked matchup for Michigan and a game Oklahoma would be embarrassed to lose at this point. The Wolverines have to look like a different team on Saturday to get a win and get back in the rankings, or else this will be a long season.
