Michigan football head coach Sherrone Moore revealed this week that the Wolverines were interested in adding a dedicated quarterbacks coach to the staff to work with quarterback Bryce Underwood.
Chip Lindsey has a very good reputation working with quarterbacks. Just ask Drake Maye, one of the NFL's leading MVP candidates. His praise of Lindsey is one reason Moore hired him to be the Michigan football offensive coordinator.
There has been some criticism leveled at Lindsey for the Ohio State. That's going to happen when your offense only scores nine points. However, Underwood didn't see the field well. Lindsey dialed up some great play calls. Underwood just didn't execute.
Michigan football also only had Jordan Marshall for four carries, which turned into 61 yards. Justice Haynes, maybe the best running back in the Big Ten this season, also missed the game.
The offense was vastly better than it was last season. But still needs to take a big step forward if it's going to be good enough to beat Ohio State in 2026.
A perfect candidate for Michigan QB coach
Getting a coach focused solely on Underwood would help. Lindsey isn't just the QB coach. He has to coordinate the offense, and Bryce needs more coaching. That was clear.
As far as candidates, Sam Webb of The Michigan Insider has connected an interesting name to the Wolverines: Mike Shula.
The former Alabama head coach was fired as the South Carolina OC last season. That's not a great sign, but he wouldn't be calling plays. He also has a long track record of working with quarterbacks in the NFL and in college. He's been an OC in the NFL multiple times, too. He was the QB coach or offensive coordinator of six different NFL franchises.
That's exactly what you'd want. The names of Chad Henne, Brian Griese, and Devin Gardner. have been floated but they don't feel that realistic.
Griese isn't leaving the 49ers to be Michigan football's QB coach. Henne and Gardner might be great QB coaches. They haven't done it, though. Shula has.
And as much blame as he got this season for South Carolina, which played an insane schedule, he was also given a lot of credit for the way LaNorris Sellers played in 2024. He was the QB coach for Cam Newton when he started his career with the Panthers.
This hire won't be about calling plays. It will be about developing Underwood's fundamentals. Shula feels like a great option, and hopefully, Michigan football makes it happen.
