An apparent change up for Michigan football on special teams

Michigan football has added a punter via the transfer portal just a few days before the start of fall camp.

Even though fall camp for Michigan football is just a few days away, the Wolverines are still finalizing their roster for the 2025 season.

On Sunday, a new addition came to light as punter Hunter Robertson, a D-II transfer from Clarion, announced his commitment to the Wolverines via a social media post on X.

Robertson has two years of eligibility left. According to The Wolverine, Robertson has spent part of the two seasons doing kickoffs and handling some punting duties.

"During the 2023 season, he served as the team’s kickoff specialist and took over punting duties late in the year. He had eight kickoffs for touchbacks that year, along with 16 punts that averaged 34.6 yards per kick. He also put five punts inside the 20-yard line. In 2024, he had 51 punts for 2,201 yards with a long of 70 yards, averaging 43.2 yards per kick, with 15 punts of 50-plus yards and 17 punts downed inside the 20-yard line. Four of his punts were touchbacks, and another 8 were fair caught."

It's technically the second transfer portal addition for the Wolverines at punter. Tommy Doman left via the transfer portal. Luke Bauer of Missouri announced a commitment to Michigan this spring, but he's not been listed on the roster or the student directory.

Robertson took a big step in 2024. He had 15 punts of over 50 yards, in addition to having 17 downed inside the 20. So he can flip the field and also pin people deep. That's the ideal thing you want in a punter.

Hudson Hollenbeck punted for Michigan in the bowl game. He's another that's expected to compete for the job, but it wouldn't be surprising at all to see Robertson take the job.

Otherwise, why add him to the roster so late?
