It's not a big secret that Michigan football needs help at the wide receiver position going into the 2025 season.

The Wolverines have added two wideouts so far from the transfer portal -- Anthony Simpson and Donaven McCulley -- but Michigan football could use another, especially on the outside and Jayden Thomas of Notre Dame might be a fit.

Thomas entered his name into the transfer portal one day after Notre Dame lost in the national championship to Ohio State. The former three-star recruit caught 63 passes during his career with the Fighting Irish and 838 total yards.

Why Jayden Thomas would fit with Michigan football

Thomas had over 300 yards receiving in 2022 and 2023, as well as multiple touchdown receptions before his production dripped this season (18 receptions for 167 yards). The former three-star receiver who was offered by Michigan football caught just two passes during the playoff run.

Yet, the Wolverines are still fairly thin at wide receiver. Thomas has shown flashes and with more opportunities, he could be a productive player. He would at least bring another player with starting experience and add some quality depth.

Deion Colzie, another Notre Dame wide receiver, entered the portal. He's 6-foot-3, 200 pounds, and was a four-star recruit out of high school but caught just 21 passes in four seasons. He's never caught 10 in a season, but again, a different opportunity could change things.

If the Wolverines added either receiver, I'd prefer Thomas. You also have to think about roster limits, etc. If Michigan football could add a bona-fide No. 1 in the spring, I would be all for it. But that doesn't seem all that likely, so another quality piece like Thomas now might be the best option.
