It shouldn't come as a surprise that after the second season of Dusty May as the Michigan basketball head coach, his assistants are already getting hired away as head coaches.
One of the best things May did when he was hired, which reinforced how strong of a head coach he is, was to hire a diverse staff, one that didn't have a lot of ties to May.
One of those was Justin Joyner. He was an assistant coach for Saint Mary's before joining May's staff two seasons ago. After helping May build a 29-2 team this season, it made sense for other programs to target Joyner, who has accepted the head coaching job at Oregon State.
One key thing about departure of Michigan basketball assistant
Congrats to Joyner. That's a great opportunity for him to show what he can do running his own program. And as we said, when you have the kind of success that Michigan basketball has had this season, it's to be expected.
Mike Boynton, the former Oklahoma State head coach, is another who could be hired away, maybe as early as this offseason. May will find a solid replacement. I. have no doubt about that.
The bigger question, as far as this season goes, is whether or not Joyner is going to remain with the Michigan basketball team. On that note, we got an affirmative answer. Joyner will stay with Michigan basketball through the end of the NCAA tournament. according to CJ Moore of The Athletic.
There will surely be some tasks for him to do with Oregon State, but the Wolverines will have their assistant coach during its postseason run, which should only help in their quest to win it all.
