When Mike Boynton was hired to replace Michigan head coach Dusty May after his departure for the NBA, there was a question as to how it would affect recruiting for the Wolverines, especially after May won a title with Michigan. Just a few months into his new position, though, it seems Boynton is doing just fine.
The basketball recruiting season is a long one, and Class of 2027 recruits are already scheduling visits and will do so through the end of the 2026-2027 season. Michigan has already gotten a visit from four-star shooting guard Chase Lumpkin and will field one from Devin Cleveland after the start of the season in November.
Boynton is now chasing a visit from one of the best recruits in the 2027 class, five-star point guard Cayden Daughtry. The No. 3 overall prospect cut his list of schools down to 14, and it included the Wolverines. With 33 offers from some of the best programs in the country, it is big to still be in the mix, but Boynton has to find a way to get the elite 2027 prospect to Ann Arbor.

Daughtry has already scheduled seven official visits to Florida State, Tennessee, Iowa, UConn, Florida, Miami, and Arkansas. This first round of visits is set to take place before the official start of the season, so he could decide to make a few more once teams hit the hardwood.

When Boynton was named the head coach, his first order of business was keeping the roster Dusty May had built. With May leaving as late into the offseason as he did, Boynton would have been in some serious trouble trying to fill roster spots. Luckily, only one player, LJ Carson, chose not to return to the Wolverines under Boynton, proving he didn't have to do much to win the locker room.
Now, Boynton is busy preparing for the season that is only a few months away, and he has to do it while recruiting. Right now, Michigan doesn't have a single commitment in the Class of 2027, which is not what Michigan fans want to see.
Boynton is in a tough spot: taking over a new team that just won a National Championship, while also building for the future as a new head coach. This first recruiting class will be huge for Boynton, who is only working on a two-year contract right now, making this job feel very much like a trial period.
Pairing a great 2027 recruiting class with a strong first season could help Boynton land a longer contract, showing he was the best fit for Michigan after May.
Landing a player like Daughtry would be huge for Boynton, especially with the talent and hype around this kid. Ranked as the No. 10 player in the SCNext 100, Daughtry is one of the most sought-after recruits in his class.
