Who knows what the Wolverines will look like in two months, but right now, Michigan basketball has the best offense in college basketball.
The Wolverines lead college basketball in effective field-goal percentage and when you shoot 69.2 percent on two-point attempts, it's easy to see why. That's what Michigan basketball did on Sunday. It also held Washington to 40.5 percent.
Washington hung around, making nine 3-pointers. But the Wolverines knocked down 11. U-M also turned it over on just 15 percent of its possessions (11) and won the rebounding battle (35-33). Vlad Goldin had 19 points (6-of-7) and seven boards, three assists and one blocked shot.
Nimari Burnett didn't miss a shot. He was 4-for-4 from 3-point range and 6-of-6 overall. Roddy Gayle scored 15 in his return to the lineup, while Danny Wolf added 11 points, eight boards, three assists, and four turnovers (still too many). Sam Walters made three treys and scored 12 off the bench.
Michigan won the game 91-75. It cruised offensively and that's why even though there were a few defensive lapses, it didn't matter. Michigan basketball overwhelmed the Huskies with their offensive efficiency and here are three things we learned.
Michigan has the best offense in college basketball
The numbers back this up but so does the eye test. The ball moves around -- there is constant movement and there just never seems to be a stagnant moment.
When there is, someone attacks the basket or gets the ball into the post, or Danny Wolf ends up with a ball screen. Regardless of the situation, this offense has so many options, it is overwhelming defenses.
Saturday's effort was honestly ho-hum compared to what this team is capable of. Wolf and Goldin each got in some foul trouble, although May allowed them to play through it at times. Wolf was still 4-of-12. He's Michigan's best player and had a so-so night.
Goldin might be the best big in the country. At least in the traditional sense. He's blocking shots, rebounding, and flat-out proving to be unstoppable in the paint.
Wolf and Goldin are almost impossible in the pick-and-roll and when the Wolverines are knocking down 3-point shots, this IS the best offense in college hoops.
