San Diego State limped into Monday night's encounter with Michigan basketball. Despite that, they raced out to a 5-0 lead, but it was all Wolverines from then on. Dusty May's troops played to their full potential, especially in the second 20 minutes, and dismantled the Aztecs by 40. The effort was pretty equally impressive from everyone who got in, most importantly of note, that it came on the defensive end of the floor. Here are a couple of the takeaways from the rest assured victory.

1. Playing incentivized made Michigan unbeatable

Whether it was the money involved or the outright will to win, Michigan basketball was energized to play like a team possessed on Monday. They shot around the same percentage that San Diego State had points. They dominated in the paint once again to the tune of a 38-12 differential. The 94-point outburst was not enough to overtake Gonzaga, but the 40-point deficit was the widest margin of victory by a landslide.

2. Late night tips are entertaining in such a recognizable field

Viewership should be very lucrative for a tournament that is only two years young. With blue bloods like Michigan, Kansas, Gonzaga, Alabama, Tennessee and so on, this event is here to stay. For as long as Gonzaga has been around the summit of college basketball, they have never faced off with Michigan. The last time Michigan beat San Diego State, was the same day that Michigan football won its first Big Ten championship in nearly 20 years. A fond memory with the stakes at their highest again this coming Saturday inside the Big House.

3. Aday Mara might be in the realm of breaking a 40 year old record

Way back in 1985 Roy Tarpley set the career block record with 95 in a season. 10 was the most he had in a game against Florida Southern. Aday Mara has 15 through his first 5 games as a Wolverine. Tarpley and the 1985 team played 33 games that season. Mara has a long way to go, but is on a torrid pace, much like Tarpley and his teammates were last century.
