Unless Jason Beck is living under a rock or is one of the most stubborn people in the world, Michigan football should be making some changes on offense.
That means mostly less Rhino.
Against Minnesota, Michigan football used the rhino package (6th offensive lineman) on 27 snaps. This wasn't the Michigan-Penn State game of 2023 when the Wolverines lined up and ran all over the Nittany Lions. That would have been welcome.
32 consecutive runs would have been better than what Beck was calling against the Gophers. Anyhting would have been better. Calling his gameplan hot garbage is being too nice.
Here's hoping Michigan is done with the rhino, except on rare occasions and here are three Wolverines who we want to see on the field more after the bye week.
Zach Marshall
This isn't trying to be ironic, it's hard to figure out why the Michigan football coaching staff isn't playing Zach Marshall.
The text messages are one thing, but he wasn't playing before that. He wasn't an all-star pass catcher last season, but he caught 16 passes for 199 yards. He made a big-time catch up the seam against Washington to help salt away that win.
Marshall wasn't a bad blocker at all. He was effective. So it's hard to reconcile why Michigan wants to play a blocker only over a player who can block and be a threat as a receiver.
Marshall doesn't have any receptions in five games. The other tight ends aren't playing well. Marshall had 72 yards against Washington and 58 against Purdue last season. He's not a superstar. Nobody is saying that, but it has felt all season like Michigan was playing its third or fourth-best tight end, along with a rhino, instead of just playing Zach Marshall.
Evan Link at guard
Whether Andrew Sprague is back or Andrew Babalola is ready to finally play some football, if Michigan could move Evan link to guard, that would upgrade the offensive line.
Brady Norton and Nathan Efobi have been Ok. Link would be better. Hell, if Babalola could bump inside, I would start him, too. That might be Michigan's best offensive line for the rest of this season.
Whittingham said last week that Babalola was going to practice. The former five-star needs to play. The Wolverines have to find out what they have over the next seven games.
Salesi Moa
This could easily be Travis Johnson or Jamie Ffrench. The Wolverines need to have more wide receivers on the field instead of just two all the time. Andrew Marsh and JJ Buchanan have been solid, but Moa is one who feels like he could make an impact.
Moa did get open in one of the earlier games, Bryce Underwood just didn't put the ball on the money. I feel like the Wolverines should be able to get him involved in the next seven games. He's a former top-100 recruit, so if not, that feels like another indictment of the Michigan coaching staff.
